North of Milton the Taieri estuary (East Coasters call it Taieri Mouth) opens up to the ocean, where the scenic highway leads down a hill without a single lookout point to dwell in the sight. But there’s always a shoulder to stop and have some quickies like boulevard press :)

Maori people formerly knew the island opposite as Motuarata. A Whaling station has been operated by local inhabitants and later pilots on the island flew signals concerning the state of the river mouth to vessels proseeding up the river with passengers and goods for the goldfields.
