Te Waikoropupu Springs

The springs were recommended to us, especially als a walk with children. And it is a really beautiful spot where a whole river arises spontanously from the ground in a giant well. The springs are a sacred place for Maori. The legends say, that the water is waiora, the purest form which is the spiritual and physical source of life. In the past, seremonial blessings took place there and the water was provided for healing. At the moment (and until further notice) the water is not to be drunk or carried away to prevent further spread of the Didymo algae. Huriawa is the beeing that guards these waterways, from the spring to the sea.
