Winter in New Zealand

How do you know it’s winter in New Zealand?

Obviously because the days are short and it gets completely dark around 5 pm. But there is another thing that tells your clearly that it is winter time: The birds’ singing in the mornings!

As soon as you can spot the first traces of sunlight you can hear a number of birds singing. Most significant of all: The Tui.

I have no idea why they are almost quiet the rest of the year. Well, in high summer they wouldn’t be heard at all because the Cicades are much louder, but it seems birds’ high season for singing starts in June and ends around September.

I’m going to miss that back in Austria.
