Wastewater treatment with a wetland

Almost all rural houses in this area are not connected to a wastewater disposal network, they have to find their own way to get rid of their sh…

The classic solution is to bury a massive septic tank that collects all solids until it is full. Every 2-3 years it needs to be cleaned out by a specialized service. Most of these systems come with an air pump that keeps biologic life alive, but the downside with that is that the pump needs power and runs all day and night, making unnecessary noise.

We looked out for alternatives that work without electricity and came up with the idea of a contructed wetland. A wetland also consists of a septic tank, but a much smaller one, that only needs to be cleaned every 10 years or so. The water treatment is done by plants though. They are planted in a bed of coarse sand where their roots can pick up the excess nitrogen. Water level is always below the top of the sand so it doesn’t become a breeding station for sandflies. Cleaned overflow water is then used to irrigate trees in the garden.
